Understanding WCAG 2.1 Color Contrast Standards
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) specify relative luminance ratios between text and background colors to ensure digital products are accessible to users with low vision or color perception deficiencies:
- Level AA (Minimum): Requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal body text (under 18pt regular or 14pt bold) and at least 3.0:1 for large text and interactive UI borders.
- Level AAA (Enhanced): Requires a contrast ratio of at least 7.0:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text headings.
- Zero Cloud Uploads: TabKit calculates all relative luminance algorithms locally inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. None of your brand guidelines or color schemes are sent to external servers.
